Newborn Diapers: Buy in Volume

Among the million ways your newborn will amaze, astonish, and astound you, diaper consumption will rank near the top of the list.  You will wonder how such a little person can use a dozen newborn diapers every day.  He or she will.  You must keep in mind your newborn is a miniature growth machine, and the machine runs overtime in overdrive 24/7.  Translation: a lot of metabolism for a lot of serious cell mitosis.  Therefore, you will want to buy newborn diapers in bulk.  Most standard packs contain forty diapers.  In newborn world, a forty-pack lasts about four days.  You also will find 150-packs—definitely a good idea.  You occasionally will find bundle of four 150-packs.  At a newborn’s pace, that bundle will last just about until your baby is ready to graduate from newborn diapers to bigger infant sizes.

For all that you want to capitalize on volume discounts, and for all you want to guard against running out of diapers in the middle of the season’s coldest, rainiest, most deadly-dangerous night, you have to exercise some caution about overstocking.  Two key variables govern your planning and acquisition: (1) your baby’s birth weight; and (2) the fact that newborn diapers fit comfortably on babies up to ten pounds.  If your baby weighed approximately ten pounds at birth—and at least 40% of boy babies now weigh-in between nine and ten pounds—you may want to move right on up to the next size.  On the other end of the scale, regular newborn diapers may not fit teeny-tiny preemies.  Even when your preemie is big, strong, and healthy enough to go home, he or she still may not be ready for new born diapers.  Work with your pediatrician or the pediatric nurses to find out about buying or ordering the diapers your “petite” requires.

While your newborn needs a new nappie approximately every two hours, and while your little growth machine continues to amaze you with prolific output, do not get bogged-down in The Great Diaper Debate.  You do face a deadline for the dilemma’s reconciliation: By the time your baby sleeps comfortably, completely undisturbed all the way through the night, you should know what will work best for you and the kid.  Until then, price and convenience should guide your decision-making.
